I quietly changed my covers this week. In hindsight, I should have done it before I published the last book in the series. I had a feeling that they were just too plain, so I added a bit of contrast with the cloudy vortex. Time will tell if it makes a difference in sales.

What else. I decided to pull books two and three from Kindle Unlimited. Why? Authors get $0.004/page read. Yes, that’s less than half a cent. That means I get $0.70/book as opposed to $2.50 from a Kindle eBook purchase.
Will that annoy readers that use KU to read my first book? That’s a possibility. I did change the book description to indicate that only book one was in KU. Will some readers still be annoyed? Probably.
Is it worth it to get 50% or more on future sales from a few less readers? Time will tell.
Then I realized, now I have to change every book image I have used previously. Maybe I’ll wait to see how the sales go. Time will tell.

The story behind Free Book Friday:
I’ve met many authors and readers during my time marketing, cross-promoting, and blogging. I think writers have a responsibility to inform readers about all the indie authors out there in the very crowded world of book publishing. You can’t do it alone, and why would you when you have a supportive group available?
Readers don’t just read one author – they stick with their favorite genres. There lies the power in cross-promotion. If one of my readers buys a book from an author I promote, then chances are there will be a reciprocal effect, or so is the hope. Do I want to boost sales? Of course I do. Do I want to boost other’s sales? Why not. It’s called karma.
Some free book offers require a newsletter sign-up, which is a small non-monetary price to pay to try out a new indie author.
